WALKING TOGETHER MURAL
Daren Dunn is a Gamilaroi man, an artist and a teacher who has a passion
for teaching Aboriginal painting to high school students.
“I have been teaching for 13 years, and have been at Windsor High
for two terms now. I work as part of the team with three other teachers,
Jacqui Reeves, Chris Prior and Julian Beedham, we are getting some really
exciting things to happen.”
Mr. Dunn has assisted 20 students in completing a two-metre work with
the theme ‘Walking Together.’ Both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
students have worked together on the painting. “Art is a fantastic
way to teach Aboriginal culture. As this is Darug land, I need to get
permission from the elders, like Aunty Edna Watson, to paint my totems."
Daren said.
In addition to the Darug, there are Wiradjuri, Gamilaroi and Murri.
The art lessons are not only a way to teach Aboriginal culture to non-aboriginal
students, but Aboriginal students also get to learn about all the different
cultures of the other tribes. These activities have helped build the esteem
of the Aboriginal students and given non-aboriginal students a way of
understanding different cultures.
